Grandma Hoot, Minnie Ola Carter Gibson

Our Story

Minnie Ola Carter Gibson

"Grandma Hoot"

When I started making my relishes and jellies, I knew I had to have a name for them. It’s really much harder than you would think; sort of like picking a name for your child! My grandmother, on my Dad’s side, was a wonderful person and we called her “Grandma Hoot”. I asked my sisters and cousins and we all agreed that her name would be perfect for my products.

Grandma and Grandpa Hoot’s last name was Gibson and the first silent movie cowboy was named, Hoot Gibson. Although we were not related, people always referred to them as Mr. And Mrs. Hoot Gibson.

I have such fond memories of her regarding many things. Her favorite things were fishing, cooking and having company over. She had a very hard life and she and her husband, Grandpa Hoot, were sharecroppers in Texas and worked their way from field to field, picking cotton and taking care of their 5 children. They finally settled in Glen Rose, Texas and that’s where my relationship with them began. Grandpa Hoot died in the 60’s but Grandma Hoot kept on fishing and cooking and teaching her grandchildren about the simple pleasures in life. There are three rivers in Glen Rose and she had a friend that could drive so they’d fish almost every day. She always wore a slatted bonnet to shield herself from the hot Texas sun.

Grandma Hoot never owned a home and never drove or owned a car, but I never remember hearing her complain. She passed away at age 93 but she lives on in my heart. I could not think of a better way to honor her than to name my business after her.
